When searching EBSCOhost databases, you can browse the Subject Terms authority file to perform an exact search for articles using specific subject terms. In this tutorial we look at how to browse for subject terms and add them to the search box to find articles in EBSCOhost. When searching an EBSCOhost database, click the Subject Terms or Thesaurus link at the top of the screen. Please note, if you are searching multiple databases at once, you see subjects lists or thesauri for individual databases available in a drop-down menu. In this case, you would select the subjects list or thesaurus that you would like to browse. For example, the Academic Search Complete Subject Terms or the Business Thesaurus.
To begin, enter your terms in the Browse field and select a display option from the available radio buttons below the field: Select Term Begins With, Term Contains, or Relevancy Ranked. Click the Browse button to view your terms as they appear in the Subject Authority File. Related subject terms are displayed in a list. You can click on a subject term to view any available Scope Notes, Broader Terms, Narrower Terms, or Related Terms. To run a subject search against the database, check the box for one or multiple terms and click the Add button. The terms are added to the search box. Next, we’ll search for another subject term to add to our search using the Boolean operator drop-down menu.
Enter new terms into the Browse field and click the Browse button. Check the box for the subject term or terms to be added to the search box and select a Boolean operator from the drop-down menu. Click the Add button to add the term to the search box. In this example the subject terms are combined with the AND Boolean operator in the search box to return results that deal with both global warming and climatic changes. Click Search to execute your search and display a result list related to your chosen subject terms. From the result list, you can narrow your results using the limiters, source types, and facets in the column on the left. At any time, click the Help link to view the complete online Help system.
